We never left and thus we remain.
So we'd like to take this opportunity to recap what Freshwater Zissou has been up to, at least in Minnesota. Over the last 6 months over 600 cans have been recycled by members of Team Zissou ~ MN - cans that otherwise would have washed into the Mississippi, been buried into a "permanent" landfill, or ground into the soil. As we understand, the world keeps consuming cans made from virgin metal (melting rock, extracting metallic parts, converting the metal into a usable form- all very energy- consumptive processes.) And so to celebrate our success and rise to the larger challenge, we have an announcement:
CONvergence 2008 www.convergence-con.org July 3- 6, 2008 Team Zissou is making a concerted effort to coordinate and be a part of CONvergence's metal can recycling. We want to recycle what was previously landfilled. We want it to be easy, and a positive endeavor for all involved.
Or, to break it down: We'll be asking to borrow people's large plastic barrels; We'll be going around collecting cans; We'll be recruiting volunteers for small, yet sexy, shifts. (There will definitely be benefits involved for those participating.)
We remain,
Nico

We'd really like to get some correspondence stock. But there are more pressing matters, such as networking amongst the other clubs in the twin cities. We're talking USS Nokomis, MN Force, probably a bunch of others. The Dystopia kids are pretty much the coolest thing to happen to the twin cities that we've ever heard of. To that end, we've made contact with another group: The command crew of the U.S.S. Nokomis. http://www.ussnokomis.org/ Here follows our letter: Hi! I'm going to CONvergence 2007 ~ Creature Feature and would like to meet up with some USS Nokomis crew. Specifically I am interested in learning about how your club works and what sort of things you do, and also socializing. I am starting a little club in the twin cities with a similar structure: Team Zissou ~ MN (Freshwater Chapter; Zissou Society of America). We're loosely based upon the Wes Anderson/ Owen Wilson film The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. So far our membership is small and our experience is, well, naught, but we're already having fun. Would you be willing to meet with us? We would like to hear some input as to how to build and maintain this club. Here is some more information about us: http://www.beautyability.com/mnzissou.htmI do know that one of our weaknesses is that not everyone is familiar with the source material (the film) but perhaps that could be used to our advantage. It's kind of like an "inside joke". -Nico Founding Member Team Zissou ~ MNFreshwater Chapter Zissou Society of America

unknown woman on beach, British accent: "What ARE you doing out here in your pyjamas?" Steve: "Who are you?" (quotes not verified.) A member of Team Zissou ~ MN recently made a quick trip to Sears ~ Riverdale on a whim and the shopping trip went well. Said member reports finding a pair of Adidas shoes with a style marginally similar to the film "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" at a clearance cost of $19.99 USD. As a result the Adidas shoes were purchased, johnny on the spot. A chance stop at another nearby retailer yielded a pair of yellow laces. Team Zissou ~ MN stands at the ready and meets the challenge. The highlight of the shopping trip was perhaps in the Men's Department ~ pyjamas where it was noted that Sears has an amazing selection of men's pyjamas with a style matching the film very closely. Though we realize the irony of assembling costume uniforms that are more of an interpretation of what a Freshwater Chapter might wear at the same time passing up right- on pyjamas, Team Zissou ~ MN nevertheless must eschew the right- on pyjamas, primarily out of budgetary concerns. Besides, budget problems are true to the film. (But so are troublesome love triangles! Why ARE we creating a fanclub based upon this film, anyway?) But if you wanna buy us some Sears pyjamas, we'd totally love that. Seriously. You may wire us part of your inheritance. But cash works better. The MN Chapter of the Freshwater Team Zissou Society has arrived to LJ! If interested in joining for real-life outings to locations in the MN area, lake and/or river and pond excursions, as well as CONvergence July 6, 7, and 8th, 2007, email us at mnzissou@yahoo.com. Three Reasons: Freshwater...why you should care!
1) Fresh water contains low concentrations of dissolved salts and other total dissolved solids. It is an important renewable resource, necessary for the survival of most terrestrial organisms, and required by humans for drinking and agriculture, among many other uses.
2) Access to unpolluted fresh water is a critical issue for the survival of many species, including humans, who must drink fresh water in order to survive. Only three percent of the water on Earth is fresh water in nature, and about two-thirds of this is frozen in glaciers and polar ice caps. Most of the rest is underground and only 0.3 percent is surface water. Freshwater lakes, most notably Lake Baikal in Russia and the Great Lakes in North America, contain seven-eighths of this fresh surface water. Swamps have most of the balance with only a small amount in rivers, most notably the Amazon river. The atmosphere contains 0.04% water. 3) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minnesota_l akes Current Mood: busy Current Music: Seagulls overhead chirping...
